Self Expression: What Does Our Eye Makeup Say About Us?

In a world where topics trend in moments and likes can trump likability, self expression has managed to find itself at an all time high. While the masses hurry to fit the mold, there are still those brave souls that set the trends and go the extra mile to stay true to themselves and their identify. For beauty lovers, now more than ever, this rapid self expression has come to life in the form of eye makeup.

Yes, the emotional zeitgeist of our day can be revealed by our eye makeup choices. We’re dying for nostalgia — taking us back to the glitter of our childhood and the pastels we saw our favorite pop stars rocking in the early 2000’s. We’re all on a search for dewey wellness and a glow up that is both figurative and literal — making glossy eyelids a moment we’re all collectively here for. And then, there are the bursts of color that no matter the outfit, are a proud claim to femininity and the acknowledgement of womanhood.

I mean, is it really that deep? It could be. Take HBO’s Euphoria makeup artist Doniella Davy for example. She used creative eye makeup as a direct reflection of each character’s emotional state and these choices greatly impacted the storytelling. Could we all be making silent attempts at telling our stories with our beauty expressions?

Whatever the case, I am loving the rise of creative eyeshadows, eyeliner, glitter and lashes that all say “I am here, look me in the eyes!” I opted for a metallic green wing recently, and though the style was simple in comparison to some of my favorite recent looks, the step outside of the box made me feel good to be marching to the beat of my own drum.
