A Case For the Cozy Sweater

Quarantine has defined new ways in which we dress. Women are gravitating more towards comfortable, cozy yet stylish pieces for those quick commutes to and from home (or from the bedroom to the living room). Sweaters are always my favorite go-to during the colder seasons when I want to be warm but stylish. Cozy sweaters are such a staple wardrobe item—they’re great for dressing up or down!

With Fashion Week being virtual this year, it was easier to catch some shows from the comfort of my living room. Designers such as Altuzarra, Bottega Veneta, and Christopher Kane, to name a few, showed the popular sweater in fresh, eclectic variations for the FW 2020 season. From cardigans emblazoned with fuzzy details to sexy cutouts and oversized turtlenecks, it was easy to gain some new inspiration.

I was inspired by Altuzzara’s cardigan look and decided to go for a preppy-meets-minimalist inspired look with this fuzzy cropped cardigan. Simple but cute—just like me!

Below are ten sweaters that should inspire you to incorporate this ever-popular piece in your wardrobe just in time for winter.

The K Label, KOTTONS Stamped Plunge Sweatshirt

Although labeled as a sweatshirt, this piece has more of a sporty-meets-sweater style to it. It features a plunge neckline and a polo style collar—perfect for those “running errands but I still want to serve some type of look” days. You can pair with flared leggings, trainers and mini sunglasses.

Cult Gaia, Sierra Sweater

Perfect for anyone that loves earth tones, this piece checks all of the cozy sweater boxes. Get into the “neutral hued Oatmeal, so you’ll look as cool as you are comfortable,” as described on their website. It can be worn in so many variations. For a nice outing at your favorite cafe, pair with an oversized white button down blouse, thigh high boots and oversized sunglasses.

She. The Label, Black Turtleneck Crop

Sometimes, simple is enough. Turtlenecks are another major fall/winter essential that can be mixed and matched with pieces in your closet. This simple cropped turtleneck can be layered with a blazer, black skinny jeans, and black square toe boots for a Yves Saint Laurent inspired look.

I.AM.GIA, Anona Jumper

Whoever said you can’t wear white after Labor Day, obviously had no taste. I.AM.GIA designed this cozy sweater that looks like a soft pillowy cloud and probably feels amazing against the skin. If you are into cropped but billowy sweaters, this is the one! Pair with matching cream leather pants and heeled croc boots for a spin on the classic monochromatic look.

APT1E APPAREL, Leah Puff Sleeve Cropped Sweater

What would a woman be without a sexy off-the-shoulder sweater? This piece is perfect for when you want to show a little skin, but stay warm. Date night, girlfriends’ night out, vacay, or whenever you just want to be a little sultry. Pair with high-waisted denim jeans, and boots.

Kill Wardrobe, Fly Sweater

Described as “the coziest sweater you can have this season,” Kill Wardrobe created the coziest 2-in-1 style sweater. This is great for when you can’t decide between sweater vest or chunky sweater. Wear with boyfriend jeans and leather chunky sole pull-on boots for a casual but chic look.

Hanifa, Mya Knit Cardigan Dress

The best cozy sweaters are the ones that we can literally throw on and be out the door looking like it took hours to get ready! Hanifa is known for bold colors, and styles that accentuates women’s curves beautifully, and the Mya Knit Cardigan does just that. Made from Korean acrylic yarn, you can wear this beauty in various jewel colors: emerald, mustard, orange, denim blue, and the list goes on. Pair with colorful thigh high boots or wear around the house while handling business or reading a book. Either way, you will look beautiful!

Silhouette Stylez, Blurred Lines Sweater

Just because it’s sweater weather, does not mean you can only wear turtleneck styles. This sweater from Silhouette Stylez is more body hugging than the others on the list but it is still “COZY,” as described on their site. It comes in three colors: red, lime and white. You can definitely wear this with dark denim jeans, square toe heels and a shoulder bag for brunch with the girls.

Nappy Head Club, Cardi Set - Green Tea

Cardigans are versatile and a wardrobe must-have, thanks to Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport, the fashionable besties from 90s cult-classic, Clueless. This item really became a popular summer staple last year with cropped cardigans and vintage high-waist jeans. This year, Altuzarra showed matching cardigan and top and now it’s on everyone’s must-have list. This rib knit matching cardigan set is every prepster’s dream piece. The color alone caught my eye. We tend to go for darker colors during the colder seasons, and this would be a nice pop of color to this simple but cute duo.

The Source Unknown, Tie-Dye Mohair Sweater

Tie-dye made a major splash this summer in the fashion world. We saw it everywhere. From crop tops to jeans, tees, and shorts—even in viral DIY TikToks. It looks like the trend will not be going anywhere, thanks to multi-brand concept store, Source Unknown. This tie-dye sweater is a great way to try out the trend if you didn’t get chance to last summer.

Day by Day, Mocha Sweater Tank

Some days may be cooler than others, and this sweater tank from Day by Day will be your saving grace. Just the right amount of cozy to keep you warm in the morning but not too hot when the chill wears off mid-afternoon. Layer with a cropped leather moto jacket, asymmetrical midi skirt, and knee-high boots.

Remember: fashion is fun and it is a great way to play around with colors, silhouettes, prints, colors, etc. Will you be trying out any of these knitwear trends this season? If so, what specific pieces have caught your eye?
