Building A Legacy Of Impact With Fine Jewelry Designer Symone Currie

Written by Kindra Moné

Every entrepreneurial story has its hills and valleys, but the journey to a profitable fine jewelry brand is incredibly steep. Engineer-turned-designer, Symone Currie, knows this all too well, yet she is determined to take up space within an industry that has been kept tight for so long.

On this episode of The StylingSOUL Podcast, we caught up with Symone to (of course) chat about what’s happening in the world of fashion, and to learn how she has navigated her career as a designer and founder of the Jamaica-based fine jewelry brand, MetalxWire. From Jamaica to the world, Symone’s perspective is one of self-determination and risk-taking motivated by the desire to create exceptional work that will be appreciated for generations.

Symone on representation

“Classism exists in Jamaica, but the last thing that we’re generally thinking about is race…my confidence goes up [in Jamica]. When I have difficult questions, there are so many people like me in places of power and making moves where I don’t feel limited.”

Symone on metalxwire

“My designs are minimal yet stately. You can wear them now, you can wear them later. You don’t have to rush to buy everything now, because I am designing quality to go slow and grow with you.”

symone on jewelry as legacy

“I started making custom pieces because I’m allergic to anything less than 14K gold. I have pieces from my grandmother, so I’ve always made jewelry with the hopes of passing it down—whether that’s to my niece or my future children.”

Symone on risk-taking

“If I had known what it would take and how expensive it would be, I might have been overwhelmed. [I’m young without children, so my thought was] If you go broke, you can always get a job and make it back—it’s not that deep. We’re in a space where people never want to fail publicly, but just focus on making something great and go for it. You just have to keep going, and if it’s good quality and has excellent design, it will speak for itself.”
